About Brevig

An extensive hydraulic study, under way at HR Wallingford's laboratories, will determine the remedial works necessary at the new £2.2 million harbour in the Western Isles, which has been declared unusable for six months of the year.

Problems were apparent at the Brevig harbour at Broad Bay on Lewis, before its opening. Instead of providing shelter for the fishing fleet it was designed to protect, the design of the harbour allowed a 2m high swell driven by Atlantic storms to surge around the basin, damaging boats before it was finally evacuated.

Construction of a breakwater is now seen as essential if the harbour is to fulfil its original purpose.
